In Sympathy: Our Loss of Juiceman Jay Kordich

In the middle of the night this past Saturday, May 27, 2017, the world lost an icon. And I lost a dear friend.

The Father of Juicing, the “Juiceman,” Jay Kordich, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 … leaving behind an unparalleled legacy.

Jay ignited the juicing movement in this country.

At the age of 22, he healed himself of a rare form of cancer with a simple recipe of apple/carrot juice. That triumph over death sparked a lifelong passion to teach and inspire others to heal and live long, healthy lives through juicing.

Jay was the man who inspired me to juice in my early twenties.

It’s his work … his contagious fire … his books and his passionate lectures … that helped me to win my battle against high cholesterol, rid my body of toxins I had spent a lifetime accumulating, and set me on a lifelong path of good health.

Jay did the same for thousands of others across the nation, and ultimately the world.

His passion was so intense and well-known, that he was the subject of an endearing parody by actor, Jim Carrey in the 1990s.

I had the opportunity to work closely with Jay and his wonderful wife Linda to produce the online “School of Juicing”, a compilation of much of his life’s work.

I was lucky to get to know Jay.  And I got to meet my juicing idol many times. He was as sweet, positive and inspiring in person as the man I watched on TV in my youth.

Jay carried the same passion for juicing into his 90s that he had his most of his life… and he was a model in death as he was in life.

Jay passed away from natural causes. Without disease.  And I understand from Linda that he literally died with a smile on his face.

He leaves this earth with a life that was more than accomplished… he really did change the world.

Whenever you step into a juice bar, know that it was Jay that was responsible for creating the movement that continues to grow today.

If you had the opportunity to learn directly from Jay, then you are blessed. But if you didn’t, know that his influence has affected you in some way. Just as surely as if you had heard one of his impassioned lectures.

Jay was filled with love and gave so much.. not only to all of us, but to his family.  He was always by Linda’s side, and trusted her to be the mind behind growing the “Juiceman” brand in the 90s.  His sons were raised on juice, and they remained a close family up until Jay’s final days.

Linda will continue to carry on Jay’s wisdom. And she has her own big voice to share in the health movement.

From Linda Kordich:
Creating a public memorial/celebration of life for Jay is the perfect way to say goodbye to him as well as helping his young family find closure.

This celebration of life is a way to shine a light on Jay’s passion and for us to all come together and celebrate his amazing, selfless, and dedicated life. The Kordich family will use the funds to help cover funeral costs and arrange for a public event in Los Angeles this summer. With you, we’ll pay tribute to the man who paved the way for us to understand that eating living foods and juicing creates ‘life’ inside of us, and that we can all live a life full of vitality, longevity, and disease-free living.

Jay Kordich’s work touched the lives of millions, and we humbly ask that if you can, please help us by donating so we can properly honor this amazing leader of this great teaching.

Jay is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda, and their two sons, John (33) and Jayson (31). We are so grateful for all the love and support you’ve shown us over the years. We plan on continuing to carry Jay’s torch and spread the word about the power of juicing.

Tribute to Dr. Jameth Sheridan, the Ultimate Health Warrior

A true Health Warrior, Dr. Jameth Sheridan, recently passed away. And I am struggling to find the words to pay him tribute….

To me, Jameth was more than just a leader in the health movement, an inspiration and guiding light…

He was a friend.

I first met Dr. Jameth Sheridan over ten years ago when I had the opportunity to interview him on my first radio show…

I can remember his passion… his strong spirit… and his commitment to spread a message that transcended far beyond food.

That is the Jameth I remember… and thankfully I have many of his interviews to share so that his message resonates in years to come.

Dr. Jameth Sheridan was like a human computer… artfully combining facts with passion to show us another way to transform our lives with real food and nutrition …

and reach a state of health that can be only be stated as “transcending.”

He was a gifted teacher and speaker. I have been honored to feature many great men and women on my shows and summits over the years. None have received the passionate acclaim of my fans like Dr. Sheridan. People loved him. And his words resonated with them.

Dr. Jameth Sheridan put the needs of others before himself.  He was perhaps the most compassionate and generous person I have ever met.

In private conversations, Dr. Sheridan would share with me his ultimate mission… to create a vegan world…

a world where we aren’t dependent on animals for food…

a world where we aren’t victim to the propaganda put forth by the meat and dairy industry touting their newest caveman diet…

a world where we live and let live, and are rewarded with superior health.

His love for others was his mission, and his spent countless hours researching the latest studies on the foods that both prevent and lead to sickness and disease.

Dr. Jameth Sheridan lived his message… even though he was born with a body that would ultimately fail at a younger age.

I was able to pay a visit to Jameth’s bedside in his final days… I was awarded the opportunity to thank him for all he brought to this planet, while reminding him how much more he still has to share…

And he does still have much to share. I want to thank Dr. Sheridan for leaving us with a wealth of knowledge, understanding and wisdom that we can pass on in the work that we do…

His spirit will live on in our work at Juice Guru and our programs that he remains a part of…

Goodbye, my dear friend. Rest in peace.

UPDATE: Kim Sheridan’s statement MUST BE SHARED WIDE. Warning: This is a heart-wrenching and difficult read. What bravery from Kim Sheridan. Our heart goes out to her at this time of mourning.

Bone Broth is NOT like Juice

Bone Broth is NOT like Juice

Bone Broth is NOT like Juice

Bone Broth is NOT like Juice

Everywhere you look today, people are swearing by the magic of bone broth. Moms have even dedicated full websites to the splendors of raising their young kids on this latest trend. That’s a really scary thought though … in light of the findings of a new study …

A recent study has proven that bone broth – even when made from the bones of organic, free-range chickens – contains “remarkably high” levels of lead.

Why? Because lead bio-accumulates in our bones and, naturally, in the bones of other birds and animals. Unlike many other toxins, lead doesn’t leave the body easily. It can take upwards of 30 years to “get the lead out.” In the meantime, it gathers together and hangs out in your bones (or, of course the bones of chickens), releasing free radicals and causing havoc on your body systems.

Worst of all, lead causes often IRREVERSIBLE damage to the brain, causing lower intelligence and function, as well as suppression of  your immune system.

Dr. Michael Greger sums it up in the following video. Definitely have look if you or someone you love is into this new (and dangerous) “health” trend.

Tribute to the Sproutman

Tribute to the Sproutman

Tribute to the Sproutman

Tribute to the Sproutman

Sproutman Steve MeyerowitzIt is with a heavy heart that I write this blog post. The world has lost an incredible man who gave his life to educate us on the benefits of natural health. Sproutman Steve Meyerowitz was taken from us in an automobile accident two days ago at the young age of 65. When I heard the news today, my heart dropped. As I sit here, I am finding it hard to find the words.

In my last conversation with Steve about a month ago, he was just returning from a friend’s funeral. He told me how sad it is…that we have to watch our friends and family suffer from diet-related diseases and eventual death- when we have a solution that doesn’t include medication and painful surgery. We wondered why they consider us the “crazy” ones and how we can overcome these negative challenges. And we tried to figure out how we could better inspire more people, including our family and friends to seek a natural, healthy solution. I’ve always had the utmost respect for the inspiring line of work Steve has produced. This includes over 10 books, sprouting equipment, wheatgrass supplements, online courses and much more.

Steve Meyerowitz promoted the health message long before it was considered cool or trendy.

I feel lucky to have known him. We created an audiobook together “Steve Meyerowtiz’ Wheatgrass Audiobook” and he is a professor in our Certification Program. We were going to produce a variety of courses for Juice Guru Academy next year. I want to share an interview I did with Steve just a few months ago. I am happy to have shared time with him. I wish his family deepest sympathy, love and support. We lost a true inspiration.

Steve was pronounced “Sproutman®” by Vegetarian Times Magazine in a 1979 feature article that explored the why’s and wherefores of his 100% sprout diet. While over 2 decades time, most diets change, Steve was still a big “believer” in healthy diet and lifestyle.

Sproutman's Just Juice DietSteve got interested in natural foods after a 20 year effort to correct chronic allergies and asthma with conventional medicine. He made dramatic changes in his diet and within two months of eating a strict “living foods,” vegetarian diet, his lifelong symptoms vanished. He continued to practice a 100% raw foods diet (nothing cooked, packaged, canned, frozen, or processed) for five years. During that time, he also experimented with other extreme diets such as fruitarianism (just fruit), juice fasting for as long as 100 days, and briefly, breatharianism (no food, no water).

Steve’s innovative kitchen gardening techniques and the cuisine he developed from them, gave rise to a “School for Sprouts.” He began teaching indoor gardening 12 stories above the streets of New York City. He called his no-cooking school, The Sprout House, since so much of his cuisine included vegetables from his kitchen garden-sprouts. Steve invented two home sprouters, The Flax Sprout Bag and a tabletop greenhouse called, Sproutman’s Kitchen Garden Salad Grower. He also supplied his growing kits and a full line of organic sprouting seeds via mail order.

Steve had since sold the mail order business and he and his family decided to breathe fresher air in the Berkshire mountains of Massachusetts. Much of the information from his teaching years have been related in his books. He has the most popular books on sprouts, including Sprouts the Miracle Food, Sproutman’s Kitchen Garden Cookbook, and Wheatgrass Nature’s Finest Medicine, to name a few. But he also has other books on subjects such as fasting and raw juice therapy.

Steve had been featured on Web MD, Raw Food World, Natural Health 365, Natural News, Renegade Health Show, Hippocrates Health Institute, PBS, QVC, the Home Shopping Network, TV Food Network, and in Prevention, Better Nutrition, and Organic Gardening magazines. In 3 minutes on QVC, 953 people ordered his Cookbook and Kitchen Garden Salad Grower.

Steve leaves his wife, Beth Robbins, an English, drama and history teacher at the Berkshire Waldorf High School, and three children, Gabrielle, Ari and Noah.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 13 at 9:30 am, at Hevreh of Southern Berkshire, 270 State Road in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Internment will follow at the Ahavath Sholom Cemetery on Blue Hill Road. Thank you for the inspiration and love you gave to all of us Steve Meyerowitz.  You will be forever in our heart.

Celebrities in Need of Juicing

Celebrities in Need of Juicing

Celebrities in Need of Juicing

Celebrities in Need of Juicing

Juice Guru is a positive brand dedicated to actively encouraging people to live healthy lives. So, why then would we publish a “top 5” list of those celebrities who are not … how shall we say it … at their best?

It’s not what you think.

We’ve all seen those cruel “top” lists of badly aging celebrities. Those other lists exist solely to set celebrities up for ridicule (sort of kicking them while they are down) or call them out as cautionary tales of “don’t let this happen to you.”

This list is different.

At Juice Guru, we believe that there isn’t a person out there who wouldn’t benefit greatly from a juice makeover. We’ve selected these 5 high-profile people as examples of what we think daily juicing (and perhaps a lengthy cleanse) would do for them. If it can help these celebrities at the extremes, imagine what it can do for you.

We sure hope these celebs are listening…

1. Kirstie Alley – The (Often) Overweight Yo-Yo DieterKirstie Alley

Kirstie’s challenge:  In her prime, Kirstie Alley was one of the most beautiful actresses around. At 63, she still is stunning. But through the years, Kirstie has fallen victim to weight gain and, even worse, yo-yo dieting. Kirstie was the spokesperson for Jenny Craig from 2004-2007, she has had her own diet line since then, and just recently signed back up with Jenny Craig to lose another 30 pounds. It’s unclear how many other diets Kirstie has tried, but one thing is clear: She has become just as famous for her up and down weight as she has for her acting career.

Yo-yo dieting is not only frustrating, but very hard on your body. Often, you lose weight quickly, only to gain that weight back – and then some. The problem is that fad “diet cures” come and go, and they are neither good for your body (think high meat, low carb fads) nor sustainable in the long run (think prepackaged meal plans).

Juice Guru Cure:  Daily juicing is just what Kirstie needs to drop that 30 pounds and keep it off for good. Having just one fresh 24-32 ounce juice in place of breakfast every morning delivers the equivalent of a week’s-worth of nutrition directly into your cells. After that, you can go about your day doing and eating whatever else you want (without the worry of whether it fits on some “diet plan”). The pounds come off, but more importantly, they come off in the healthiest way possible.

Of course, we recommend a whole-food diet, rich in plant-foods and daily exercise. But we know once you feel the vitality, youthfulness and energy you gain from daily juicing, you will naturally make sustainable healthy choices.

2. Lindsay Lohan – Out of Control Twenty-Something Aging (WAY) Too YoungLindsay Lohan

Lindsay’s Challenge: Since her early adulthood, Lindsay Lohan has chosen a tough road full of partying, arrests, and extreme difficulties on the sets of her various acting projects. Her partying ways have badly damaged her reputation and career. And, today, she looks as though she has aged decades in just a few short years. Much of her troubles involve drugs and a hard lifestyle. Another large part appears to include her psychological and emotional stability.

Many celebrities are turning to extreme “party-cures” like intravenous fluids at specialty hangover clinics. These are nothing more than (possibly risky) quick fixes that allow troubled people, like Lindsay, to continue partying with reckless abandon. Even rehab seems to be a revolving door for many troubled young people, as many fall right back off the wagon.

Juice Guru Cure:  In conjunction with a rehab, we recommend a juice feast for Lindsay. One to two weeks on nothing but freshly-pressed fruit, veggie and green juices will cleanse her body, clear her head and start to rebuild her organs. A slightly longer cleanse of two weeks or more will help her excise her body of harmful addictions as well.

Perhaps most important for Lindsay, one of the lesser-known benefits of juice fasting is the effect it has on increasing brainpower and focus. Just as astounding is the effect juice cleansing has on emotional stability – cleansing out deep-rooted emotional blocks that have remained stuck for years.

Once Lindsay is cleansed, we recommend she maintain her mental and physical health with Daily Juice. Unlike anything else she has tried, this should keep her on track for life.

3.  Britney Spears – Looking (FAR) too Tired in her ThirtiesBritney Spears

Britney’s Challenge:  If you didn’t already know, you would never guess that Britney Spears is only in her early 30s. A difficult time with fame, marriage, and mental stability has caused Britney to lose her “umph” and youthful looks. But they don’t have to be lost for good…

Juice Guru Cure:  That energetic, young-looking Britney is still in there. It’s never too late to recapture your youth, and certainly not at the tender age of 33. Just a 24-32 ounce freshly-made green juice first thing in the morning will deliver all the antioxidants, phytonutrients and revitalizing power needed to take 5 years back off of Britney’s look and feel. That’s it!  You can even eat a light breakfast 20 minutes later. No other change is required.

Of course, Britney (or you) could jumpstart this transformation with a short (7-10 day) juice feast. That would clean out the gunk and allow her to rebuild her body the right way.

4. Vince Vaughn – A Bloated Version of his Former SelfVince Vaughn

Poorly aging celebrities aren’t limited to women.

Vince’s Challenge:  Remember the Vince Vaughn of Swingers’ fame? That tall, lanky, young-looking guy who stole the show? True, that was almost 20 years ago. But at 44, Vince is the same age as VegWorld Magazine’s sexiest vegan of 2014 – the (still) baby-faced, chiseled-ab’ed, Jared Leto. We’re sorry, Vince, but at this point you could almost pass as Jared’s dad (or at least his cool uncle).

Vince’s not-so-healthy lifestyle is apparent in his now bloated appearance. He is still an incredibly funny comedian, but we think he could steal the show (and women’s hearts) again with the right cure.

Juice Guru Cure:  Just like Kirstie, daily juicing is what Juice Guru orders for Vince. With just one fresh 24-32 ounce juice in place of breakfast every morning, Vince would get all the nutrition he needs to recover his youthful glow and the slimming power to ditch that bloat.

And, hey, with a short 7-day juice feast to start him off, he may just lose that double baggage he seems to be carrying under his eyes too…

5. Terri Hatcher – Using Plastic Surgery in Place of Natural Wrinkle PreventionTerri Hatcher

Terri Hatcher is gorgeous. She has always played the sexy vixen – even into her 40s. At the age of 50 she still knocks ‘em dead. But why, then, has Terri been on the top of every recent list of badly aging celebrities?

Terri’s Challenge: Terri is finding herself on the “no-no” celebrity lists because of her choice to go the unnatural route of using plastic surgery to stay young-looking. Perhaps Terri hasn’t gotten the memo that in 2014/15, women are learning how to erase decades from their looks, naturally.

Juice Guru Cure: You guessed it! Terri needs a Daily Juice regimen. Drinking a 24-32 ounce green juice every morning on an empty stomach will deliver more antioxidants, phytonutrients and revitalizing power than any other food, drink, supplement or expensive beauty product she could take. The structured water contained in fresh, raw juice keeps your skin naturally moist and supple, while the antioxidants and other nutrients minimize wrinkles, naturally.

And, as you may also have guessed, Terri would do well to jumpstart her cleansing with a 3- to 7-day juice feast.

The Cure for Anything that Ails You

If you see any of these celebrities, please pass on our recommendations.

In the meantime, we recommend that you try daily juicing yourself for 30 days. By day 31 you will look and feel better than you can ever remember. Once you’ve rediscovered the best you in there, you will likely have already created a habit for life.
