Well maybe, but let’s not forget that Easter is a celebration of life…
And, last we checked, sugar, corn syrup and yellow dye #5 (used in marshmallow peeps) don’t have much to do with a healthy life…
This year, instead, why not whip up a colorful, festive Easter treat that is both healthy and delicious?
Try this Juice Guru recipe and have the happiest (and healthiest) of Easters. Serve it up in fun Easter cups for kids or in champagne glasses for a classier adult Easter treat.
Easter Candy Fruit Punch
The beautiful color of this juice screams Easter celebration, and the flavor is sweet like a fruit punch sucking candy.
- ½ of a beet (cut in chunks)
- 3 red apples (cored and sliced)
- 1 lemon (outer peel removed, inner rind intact, cut in quarters)
- ½ inch* of ginger (peeled and cut in pieces)
- 1 medium carrot (cut in chunks)
- In a low-rpm juicer, alternate pressing chunks of beet, apple slices, lemon quarters, carrot chunks and ginger pieces.
- Stir and serve immediately. Yields approximately 32 ounces.
The ginger in this recipe is intended to offset the strong flavor of the beet and give the juice the flavor of a punch-flavored hard sucking candy. Children, however, may find ginger a bit strong. We suggest including only 1/8 inch of ginger in the juice for kids.
An Easter Treat for Life:
As compared to marshmallow treats or cream eggs, this juice is a powerhouse of nutrition.
Let’s begin with beets, which are thought to be a major reason behind the long and healthy lives of Russian people (think Borscht). These colorful root vegetables contain powerful nutrient compounds that help protect against heart disease, birth defects and certain cancers, especially colon cancer.
Apples are no slackers either, providing phenomenal antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits. They also have excellent anti-cancer and anti-asthma power and are potent blood sugar regulators (recall our recent blog post about the beneficial effect of fruit on blood sugar – even when served in conjunction with harmful sugars – so this juice is an excellent choice for the chocolaty Easter holiday).
Ginger has a surprisingly vast array of health benefits all its own. It’s an outstanding anti-inflammatory, an extreme immune booster, and protects against colorectal and ovarian cancers, among other tricks.
As for carrots…even children are aware of the vision benefits of carrots, but these beautiful root veggies have anti-cancer, antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits of their own. And last, but not least, lemons fill in the gaps with their antibiotic effects, cholesterol reduction and protection against rheumatoid arthritis.
